About Downs Mower Services

Originally founded as Downs Hardware in 1946, the principle activity was retailing of Ironmongery and Hardware. During the 1950's Mowers were taken in and sent to a trade dealer who serviced them. In 1959 it was decided that we start our own service operation. A new building was erected on land behind the original shop for this purpose.

The servicing side grew, and sales of new mowers were soon added. Downs Mower Services was formed as a subsidiary. Over the next few years the machinery side expanded and became the main activity, so in 1982 the original Hardware business was sold. By chance, also in 1982, the builders based next door to the workshop went bankrupt.

This enabled us to buy the adjoining property and make a better access, and allow room for further expansion. In 1987 a showroom for new mowers was built on this plot. The range of machinery stocked increased and now includes hand and power mowers from £39 to £1050 and ride on's from £1200 to £4000, + brush cutters, hedge trimmers, blowers, chain saws, shredders, scarifiers, trailers and hand tools. There are 3 of us operating the repair shop and we have 30, 43 and 48 years of continuous service with this company - that's 121 years in total!
